I got my brother a MicroKorg from a place near my work and decided to take some sweet photos of it before I gave it to him

Highlights from Chelmsford VS Waltham I shot for The Chelmsford Patch.  VERY low light at the stadium, everything shot at 3200 ISO, ugh.

Thursday Morning Pick Me Up Music!

The long weekend is so near, yet so far away.  If your like me, you struggle to get through Thursday mornings so you should take your time to pick yourself up with a little Dance Hall Crashers!

The Crashers are an American Ska/Punk staple, who are one of those select bands that can be said were truly doing something different.  The group is led by dual vocalists Elyse Rogers and Karina Denike, who together form an unbelievably melodic team.  They can sing together, but also do a terrific job of layering different lines as in the end of one of my favorites “All Mine” (off of Honey Im Homely!).  So check them out!

5 Whimsical Love Ballads

There you are on a warm summers evening, a beautiful lady, a glass of wine..but the mood just isn’t right yet.  You need some music.  You need…some love ballads.

1.) You’re The Inspiration - Chicago. Ahh 1984, what a year, the year we got Chicago 17.  One of Chicago’s biggest song’s saw them go from a horn based musical adventure to an adult contemporary love making band.  The ballads off of 17 have been credited as a building block for not only the power ballads of the later 80’s, but as a major influence for people like MICHAEL BOLTON.  Yah thats right..Michael Bolton.

2.) I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreigner.  Foreigner’s only number one hit is a doozy.  Some people would tell me “Waiting For A Girl Like You” deserves this spot and to them I say SHENANIGANZ.  “Now this mountain I must climb, Feels like a world upon my shoulders, And through the clouds I see love shine, It keeps me warm as life grows colder”, I mean cmon, that shizz is gold!  While you’re up in those clouds keep an eye out for the eagles flying higher and higher from St Elmos Fire.

3.)  Sometime’s When We Touch - Dan Hill.  Now if some of you want to immediately discount Dan Hill because he’s Canadian I’ll accept that.  However, the truth of the matter is that sometimes when we touch, the honesty’s to much, and I have to close my eyes and hide.  This 1977 classic is a brutally honest and heartfelt tune, “At times I’d like to break you , And drive you to your knees, At times I’d like to break through, And hold you endlessly”.  So true.

4.)  Konstantine - Something Corporate.  This is a great great great song.  A lot of people group this band in with other pop punk bands of the early 200’s, but SoCo had more to them then that.  Their piano infused rock was of a much higher caliber then many of their counterparts.  Konstantine is one of their earliest tunes, but this almost 10 minute long ballad is completely engrossing. The song does an amazing job of showing off Andrew McMahon’s soothing voice and smooth piano playing, as well as how the rest of the band compliments him so well. “Spin around me like a dream, We played out on this movie screen, And I said, Did you know I miss you?”

5.)  Faithfully - Journey.  As a long time Journey fan, I am thankful the Dont Stop Believin’ craze is finally dying down and I dont have to hear it EVERYWHERE I go.  Luckily, these fair weather Journey fans left some of the other classics alone.  Faithfully is an all time classic.  A love ballad about being on the road, away from your loved one, this well written song benefits from the tremendous vocal range of Steve Perry.  Steve Perry is the best singer of all time.  Hands down.  “Through space and time, Always another show, Wondering where I am lost without you, And being a part ain’t easy on this love affair, Two strangers learn to fall in love again, I get the joy of rediscovering yo.” Sing it Stevie, from wherever your career has not taken you too.

Hump Day Musical Selection: Ozomatli’s S/T

Ahh Hump Day.  Damn you and your midweek-ness.  Its important to get the day started well, so if you are listening to music at work you should check out Ozomatli’s 1998 self titled debut album.  This album has such a wide array of style’s and sound’s, its hard to believe it’s one band.  There’s hip hop and salsa and reggae and so much more.  So good.

Im gonna start writing stuff…5 great road trip albums.

So my coworker keeps telling me I need to Tumble more, and tweet more..so I can increase my googleization.  While I dont have the creative aspect he does to do something like that often. I can share with you all some really random stuff.  Todays topic:  5 bitchin’ road trip albums (in no order, and not my favorite, just 5 greats)

1.) Daft Punk - Discovery

    - If you dont like Daft Punk, I dont like you!  Discovery is a great album start to finish.  Starting with the infectious dance classic One More Time the album flows to diff styles of electronic music and never quits.  “Digital Love” is an all time great pop song.

2.)  INXS - Kick

    - Losing Michael Hutchence totally sucked.  INXS was a great dance rock band, and while their career was splattered with hits, Kick is the pinnacle of all their albums.  Everyone knows “Need You Tonight”, but most people will be surprised to know at least one more song on the album.  Not to mention you can serenade your sleepy shotgun rider during “Never Tear Us Apart”.

3.) Jamiroquai - Synkronized

    -  Jamiroquai (who really is just Jay Kay) is a truly great act, whose music while rooted in dance and funk, really ventures out in different ways on their albums.  Synkronized is a monster of an album.  Between everyone’s favorite “Canned Heat”, “Black Capricorn Day”, and “Where Do We Go From Here”, the beat just goes on and on.  Get the Japanese version and “Deeper Underground” is on it to, and that song rules!

4.)  Jimmy Cliff and V/A - Harder They Come Soundtrack

     - If one record could be kept from the reggae genre, it would be this record.  The songs are all phenomenal.  In high school our lacrosse coach made us listen to it before games.  “Pressure Drop” by Toots and the Maytals will forever live as a classic. “DONNTTT FUCK WIT MEEEEEEEEEEEE”.  See the movie.

5.) Rocket From The Crypt - RFTC

    - Rocket From The Crypt was a totally awesome rock band out of California.  With a lonnng career and a ton of releases, this is a personal favorite.  Their most slick and pop fueled album comes through with terrific intensity and song writing. Rock.

Agree/disagree?  What would you add?  What do you hate that people play on road trips?

totally cool.

newcollisions:

Prince Buster w/ Suggs from Madness, Jools Holland (of Squeeze)’s Orchestra.  Pretty sure Damon Albarn from Blur/Gorillaz is one of the many background singers.  Buster did one of the strangest (and greatest) shows ever at a random ballroom in Dedham, Massachusetts in 2002.  I wore a suit.
